The golden rule for the Vedacit-yellow livered leading car in Brazil’s Rally dos Sertões is, from now on, to keep it safe. After winning the first two days in the competition, the NWM-Ford Ranger V8 4x4 of Cristian Baumgart and Beco Andreotti closed the fifth stage as the overall leaders with a 15min25s advantage over Reinaldo Varela and Gustavo Gugelmin.

Cristian and Beco were fourth fastest, as Varela/Gugelmin were third only 36 seconds faster. “Today we had the longest stage, and we felt there were no reasons to risk anything. We were cautious all the way through”, said Baumgart on the 438-km stage of this Thursday between the cities of Barra do Garças and Coxim.

“There were 26 radar zones, so we managed to keep it cool not to risk taking a penalty or something worse. It was a day to use the brains, not the right foot”, highlighted Andreotti.

NWM Motorsports diretor, Neil Woolridge says the duo is looking at the bigger picture. “They are doing the perfect race. They pushed when it was needed, won the first two days and now they are keeping distance with a good lead. It has been a perfect job, from them and the team. We can see in the end of the day that the car is not damaged, the tyres are not worn. They have been taking good care of the equipment”, said Neil.

“We are in a safe position. We’ve won the first two days and now the job is to keep the distance”, he stated.

Sertões’ day 6 takes the competition from Coxim to Aquidauana in a 194-km stage out of 429 total. Friday is the penultimate day of the rally.
