Formula 2 had begun its 2020 season in Austria this weekend at the Red Bull Ring, where Britain’s Calum Ilott won the feature race on Saturday for UNI-Virtuosi and Brazil’s Felipe Drugovich of MP Motorsport was the first one to see the chequered flag on this Sunday’s Sprint race. A high-quality grid of drivers, with previous experience in the series and having made the previous step in the FIA Formula 3.
The weekend was a benchmark for Campos Racing driver Guilherme Samaia, who raced for the first time after 14 months. The Brazilian accomplished his mission of finishing both races, with a 16th place on Saturday and a 15th this Sunday. He is the only one on the grid not to have competed in the FIA F3 previously, despite having two Brazilian F3 titles to his belt.
“I learned a lot this weekend. Everything is new to me. I made a few mistakes, I took a cautious approach sometimes – especially regarding the tyres -, but step by step I felt I was progressing. It wasn’t a dream debut, but the main goal was to finish both races, which I did. The learning curve tends to grow as I keep understanding some points, procedures, and developing everytime I get into the car”, he said.
Guilherme said he could already use some experience on the sprint race, mostly on the start which, according to him, was much better than on Saturday. “Unfortunately I could’t find any space into turn 1, I ran wide and lost momentum. After that, I was taking care of the tyres and I realised that I was being too cautious; then my pace improved and I was faster than the guys in the group in front of me”, Samaia highlighted.
“The main thing is to better understand the tyres and their variations, and I think from now on everything will get better. The fact that we will race here in Austria again next weekend is great because we will have a reference to keep growing”, he concluded.
