Round 3 of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 season came to a conclusion this Sunday afternoon in Hungary as Robert Shwartzman and Luca Ghiotto have left the Hungaroring as the race winners of the weekend. As for the Campos Racing squad, the weekend was not positive as hoped by the drivers, especially Guilherme Samaia.

The Brazilian rookie had his first experience with the F2 car in the 4.381-km long circuit on Friday with a very wet track. In the first – and only – free practice, the 23-year old was sixth fastest among the nine drivers who had scored a laptime. For qualifying, though, Guilheme had an off while trying to set his flying lap and caused a red flag, forcing to start from the end of the grid.

In the feature race, the Brazilian build up pace to finish 15th, but for the first time on the dry track, the setup of the car wore the tyres more than expected. “I haven’t had too much reference, as my first time on the dry track was already in the race, but I started to build up; however, even the hard compund was hard to manage due to the high degradation, forcing me to pit earlier than planned. With the softs I got a good pace, though, despite of having to do a lot more laps than I was supposed to”, said Guilherme, who was within the top-5 when he pitted and afterwards managed to do 19 laps on the soft compund, while the recommended by Pirelli on those conditions was around 10 laps.

On Sunday, the Brazilian started well gaining three positions and finishing the first lap in 12th, but once again the tyre-wear showed its symptoms earlier than predicted and Samaia struggled on track, as he was waved the chequered flag in 21st, two positions lower than his teammate Jack Aitken. “That was a difficult Sunday for me and for the team. We haven’t found a direction with the setup and the tyre degradation was too high. Now we will work to understand why this happened and try to improve for the next rounds”, he said.

After three weekends in a row racing, the FIA Formula 2 Championship gives a two-week break until the fourth round kicks in in Silverstone, Great Britain, in August 1st and 2nd.
