Campos Racing contested Round 4 of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship season in which was another tough weekend of closely-fought action at the Silverstone racetrack. Jack Aitken and Guilherme Samaia didn’t have an easy weekend but the Brazilian had two good starts to the Saturday and Sunday races and gathered a lot of experience in race one, in which he finished 21st, to secure a good 15th place in the sprint race.
After completing 19 laps in free practice, Samaia struggled in qualifying to put a clean lap. “In my best lap I had to overtake five cars. That’s way far the ideal of a clean track”, the Brazilian stated. After starting 21st on the feature race, Samaia made a good jump, gained three positions, but struggled with the tyres and finished back in 21st spot.
Sunday on the sprint race, Guilherme used the experience gathered in the previous day to better work on the tyres and managed to a good pace, battling with Marino Sato and Roy Nissany to finish 15th at the chequered flag.
“It was rather good. I went through new experiences during an F2 race, like the virtual safety car, but I was quite happy with my starts. I still need to improve in understanding the tyres, since there’s a really thin line between being too agressive and too conservative. All in all, I am optimistic for the next roud, since we could already see some evolution”, he said.
Next – and fifth – round of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 season is next weekend during the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, once again at the iconic Silverstone circuit.
