A hard weekend at the seventh appointment of the FIA Formula 2 Championship for Campos Racing and its duo in the F1 feeder series consisting of Jack Aitken and Guilherme Samaia. The Spanish-based racing team couldn’t achieve the expected results at Spa-Francorchamps.

Aitken made a positive start to the weekend by finishing 6th on the timesheets with his lap time of 1m58.749s during Friday´s free practice session. Unfortunately, red and yellow flags again played a key role during qualifying and the Briton couldn’t lap quicker than his time of 1m59.007s, which left him 17th on the starting grid. Brazilian Samaia couldn’t set a flying qualifying lap as a result of his car catching fire but fortunately neither the driver nor the Dallara machinery sustained damage.

Saturday’s feature race saw Aitken making a good race start. On the contrary, Samaia failed to leave the grid and lost valuable seconds with the rest of the field. Aitken’s solid pace was good enough to carve his way throughout the field and was up to 13rd in lap 4. The Anglo-Korean driver still moved up to 8th before making his mandatory pit stop in lap 14. Aitken saved his tires for the final laps and crossed the finish line in 14th. Samaia’s race came to an early end after 15 laps with a broken differential.

Aitken made another stunning start on Sunday and after just one lap he had moved up to ninth. Later, he continued overtaking rivals and fired past Luca Ghiotto for seventh place. Unfortunately, Aitken was given a 10-second stop&go penalty and it ruined his chances of improving his 17th-place finish. Samaia delivered a strong performance to take the checkered flag in 15th place.

The FIA Formula 2 Championship resumes at Monza in just a week’s time.
