The 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship season goes on with its eighth appointment, which takes place at famous Autodromo Nazionale di Monza this weekend. The Italian circuit, which was built in 1922, is the oldest, most historic circuit on the F2 calendar and the home of the F1 Italian Grand Prix for most of its history. Besides, its ultra-fast layout always features hotly contested races.
Campos Racing will enter its two Dallara-built F2 2018 cars for Anglo-Korean Jack Aitken and Brazilian Guilherme Samaia. Monza brings nice memories back as Campos Racing has always achieved strong result there. Last year, Briton Aitken claimed Sunday’s Sprint race win at Monza and the Spanish team also secured top results in previous seasons, which is a morale booster ahead of this weekend. Aitken already enjoyed the sweet taste of a double podium finish at his home round at Silverstone and heads to Italy in good spirits. Samaia, who equaled his best result of the season at Spa-Francorchamps, aims at another strong performance in the boot-shaped peninsula.
Just like Spa-Francorchamps, Monza’s “Temple of Speed” is also part of motorsport’s identity and its high-speed nature requires to run low downforce settings. It highly increases the work for the tires under acceleration and braking conditions. Despite this, the overall wear rate will be lower than in Belgium a week ago. Slipstreaming is another key factor throughout the weekend and frequently can be a race decider.
“Monza is super-fast. Minimum downforce, high precision in the corners and pedal to the metal for most of the lap. I am really looking forward to drive the F2 car there. It is an iconic track”, Samaia says. According to the Campos Racing data, their cars reached 335 kph with the DRS deployed during last year’s round.
Free practice and qualifying sessions take place on Friday at 12.55 and 17.00 respectively. Saturday’s feature race is scheduled at 16.45 with Sunday’s sprint race getting underway at 11.10. All times are CET.
